So, I was working with a customer to troubleshoot an issue with a Windows client PC connected to a network at a site that is largely unattended.
They have been using the PC remotely via a VPN and Remote Desktop (no dodgy RDP port forwarding here!) and it had been working fine previously.
I attended on-site, collected the PC, tested it in the office, updated Windows 11 to 24H2, checked all the BIOS/firmware was up-to-date and confirmed it was booting successfully and allowing remote connections.
I returned the device to the customer site, tested it on-site and confirmed it was all OK.
Upon returning to the office, I thought let’s just check it’s all good remotely… Lo and behold, it was unreachable.
I logged into the firewall GUI, confirmed the PC was unreachable and thought that I would need to return to site.
A quick Google around the internet revealed the following:
It turns out that it is possible to send wake-on-LAN (WOL) magic packets from the FortiGate (or a FortiSwitch).
An example command is below:
exec wake-on-lan lan 11:22:33:44:55:66 2 9 1.2.3.4
